Partial molar pregnancy with a live fetus

In this situation, an ultrasound may show a fetus together with a placenta containing molar changes. The pregnancy may have chromosome-related problems, and the abnormal placental tissue can affect the mother's health. A live fetal heartbeat does not remove the need for a detailed review. Specialists consider the scan, pregnancy hormone levels, symptoms, and sometimes laboratory examination of tissue. Ask for referral to a maternity service experienced in high-risk pregnancy and gestational trophoblastic disease. Keep scheduled ultrasound and hormone-test appointments, and report new bleeding or pain. Before decisions are made, discuss the possible effects on your health, the fetus, and future fertility. If treatment is needed after pregnancy management, options may include removal of uterine tissue and, for persistent disease, specialist medicines such as chemotherapy.
