Pus is a thick collection of inflammatory fluid and cells. Beside a nail, it can sit under the swollen nail fold and create pressure, throbbing, warmth, and marked tenderness. The problem may follow a hangnail, cuticle damage, nail biting, or a small puncture. Moisture and chemical irritation can keep the skin barrier open, allowing bacterial infection or yeast-related inflammation to continue.

The visible pocket matters because fluid trapped under the skin may not improve with surface care alone. Avoid treating the appearance as permission to make an opening yourself: cutting, squeezing, or inserting a needle can injure the nail fold and push infection deeper.

Wash gently, pat completely dry, and cover the area with a clean dressing if it rubs against objects. Keep the hand or foot elevated when it feels throbbing, and stop nail biting, cuticle cutting, and picking. Limit soaking and protect the skin from soaps, solvents, and detergents. Do not use leftover antibiotics, share medication, lance the pocket, or force pus out. If the collection remains, a healthcare professional can decide whether abscess drainage is appropriate. They may also consider antibiotics for a skin infection or another treatment when the appearance suggests a different cause.

Pus is a reason to arrange an examination, especially when the pocket is tense, pain is strong, or swelling is increasing. Get prompt care for spreading redness, red streaks, fever, feeling faint or unwell, reduced movement, numbness, or pain extending into the finger or toe. Do not delay seeking advice if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity. Recurrent pus or a nail that stays altered also needs evaluation to identify ongoing irritation or another condition.

Ask whether the pus forms a drainable abscess, how to dress the area afterward, and whether medicine is appropriate. Mention recent nail trauma, biting, manicures, wet work, and any treatments already used. If episodes return, ask what changes could protect the nail fold and whether yeast or another skin problem should be considered.
