Paronychia finger infection: what it may look like

Look for swelling concentrated at one side or the base of the nail, glossy redness, tenderness, warmth, or a pale area that may represent pus. A torn cuticle, hangnail, or recent manicure can be visible nearby. A photo may miss depth, fluctuance, sensation, movement, or spreading redness, all of which affect assessment. Compare changes over time only in a general way and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or sharing personal images publicly. Keep the finger clean, dry, and protected from further injury. Arrange care if the area is painful, swollen, draining, or not settling. Seek urgent assessment for redness spreading beyond the nail fold, red streaks, fever, numbness, reduced finger movement, or severe pain.
