Why dryness matters

The cuticle and surrounding skin help shield the nail edge. When they split, peel, or become irritated, germs can enter through tiny breaks. Soaking, harsh cleansers, cold air, and frequent handwashing may worsen cracking. Dryness alone does not prove infection: paronychia is more suggestive when redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, or pus develops. Protect the nail fold

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser on intact surrounding skin after washing, wear gloves for wet or chemical work, and dry carefully beneath and around the nail. When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if cracks become painful, swelling or pus appears, the problem keeps returning, or the nail changes. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, fever, red streaking, numbness, or rapidly increasing pain.
