The condition often begins when bacteria or yeast enter damaged skin beside a nail. It is not generally passed simply by sitting near someone or touching intact skin. Fluid from an open or draining area can contain germs, however, so direct contact with that fluid may transfer germs to broken skin or another nail fold. Wash hands after touching the area, cover any drainage with a clean dressing, and avoid sharing towels, nail clippers, files, or manicure tools. Dispose of used dressings safely and clean reusable tools properly. Do not bite or pick the affected fold, and pause salon services until it has healed. Get prompt assessment if redness spreads, pain or swelling increases, pus collects, fever appears, or red streaks travel away from the nail. A draining pocket may require Abscess Drainage.
