Misoprostol changes the activity of the womb and cervix. Depending on the clinical situation, a qualified clinician may use it for medical management of miscarriage, to help prepare the cervix, or as part of induction of labour. The medicine can cause cramping, vaginal bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills or fever. The expected effects and follow-up depend on why it was prescribed, how it is given and the stage of pregnancy. A tablet obtained from an unverified source may have uncertain strength or instructions.

Seek urgent help for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or worsening pain, persistent high temperature, foul-smelling discharge, breathing difficulty or feeling seriously unwell.
