What should you know about pap smear detect ovarian cancer?

During a Pap smear, a clinician collects cells from the cervix to look for cervical cell changes. The ovaries are separate organs, and ovarian cancer may not shed cells into the cervical sample. A normal Pap smear therefore cannot rule out ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer can present with persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, feeling full quickly, or changes in urination or bowel habits. These symptoms can have many causes, so they do not establish ovarian cancer. A clinician considers their pattern, examination findings, family history, and other health information.

Book an assessment if symptoms are new, persistent, or becoming more frequent. The clinician may consider a pelvic examination, imaging such as pelvic ultrasound, and blood or tissue tests when appropriate. If a tumour is found, further testing can identify its type and help plan treatment.

Tell the clinician about ovarian or breast cancer in close relatives and any known BRCA-related family finding. Do not replace a symptom assessment with a routine Pap smear.

Arrange prompt assessment for ongoing abdominal swelling, pelvic pain, unexplained weight change, unusual vaginal bleeding, or persistent bowel or bladder changes. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, repeated vomiting, or heavy bleeding.
