Pancreatitis and swelling of the abdomen

The abdomen may look enlarged or feel stretched, tender or uncomfortable. Pancreatitis commonly presents with upper abdominal pain, and nausea or vomiting may occur at the same time. Swelling can also result from constipation, gas, gallstones or another illness, so its presence cannot identify the cause by itself.

A clinician may ask whether the pain began suddenly, whether it reaches the back, and whether you have had gallstones, alcohol exposure or earlier episodes. Examination and blood tests help guide the decision about imaging and treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice when abdominal swelling is new and painful or continues alongside vomiting. Rest, avoid alcohol, and take small sips of water or oral rehydration fluid if you can keep them down. Do not press firmly on the abdomen or rely on home remedies to explain persistent symptoms.

Write down the onset, pain location, bowel changes, vomiting episodes and medicines taken. This gives the clinician a clearer picture and helps decide whether you need same-day care, testing or hospital assessment.

Get emergency help for intense or worsening pain, a hard abdomen, ongoing vomiting, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, fever, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or marked reduction in urination. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.

Ask what other causes should be considered, whether pancreatitis testing is needed, whether an ultrasound could help, how to manage fluids, and how soon your symptoms should be reviewed.
