Palm of hands and feet itching: what to know

Dryness, frequent handwashing, detergents, gloves, or friction can weaken the skin barrier and create itch, scaling, or cracks. Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis can inflame the skin; contact dermatitis often follows exposure to a product or material. Psoriasis may produce thicker, sharply defined scaly areas, while a skin yeast infection can cause soreness, peeling, or moist scaling. Scabies can cause intense itch and may affect household contacts. Lichen planus can cause itchy, firm bumps or thicker patches. Hives tend to appear as raised areas that change location. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

Use a fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after washing and again when the skin feels tight. Wear breathable footwear and change damp socks; avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and newly introduced creams until the cause is clearer. A cool compress can calm the urge to scratch. Note recent products, medicines, foods, travel, animal contact, and whether anyone close to you is itchy. A clinician can match treatment to the appearance and distribution.

Arrange a medical assessment if the itch persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or comes with cracking, scaling, blisters, pain, or spreading redness. Seek prompt care for warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening skin. Get urgent help if itching occurs with facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread hives. New palm or sole changes with yellowing skin, dark urine, or marked general illness also deserve prompt evaluation.
