What should you know about painting plaster of paris molds?

Plaster of Paris hardens into a rigid material that can be shaped into a model or used as part of a medical cast. Its surface can absorb moisture and paint, so rushing to decorate it may soften the outer layer, trap dampness or create flaking. A decorative mold is different from a cast supporting an injured body part; a medical cast should never be painted, cut, covered or modified without the treating team’s approval.

A sealed craft mold may accept water-based acrylic paint after it has dried completely. The choice depends on the project, the surface finish and whether the object will be handled often.

Let the mold dry in a ventilated place, brush away loose dust, and apply a suitable sealer if the surface is chalky or porous. Use thin coats of paint rather than soaking the plaster. Keep powder away from the eyes and lungs while mixing, wash hands afterward, and follow the product label for ventilation and protective equipment. Allow each coat to dry before adding another. Store the finished piece where drops, heat and prolonged dampness are unlikely.

Seek medical advice promptly if paint or moisture has entered a medical cast, if the cast becomes soft or cracked, or if the skin underneath develops increasing pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, unusual colour, discharge or a bad smell. Difficulty moving the fingers or toes, or a sudden change after an injury, also warrants prompt assessment. These signs can reflect pressure, skin trouble or loss of support rather than a simple cosmetic issue.
