What should you know about paint to use on plaster of paris?

Plaster of Paris absorbs moisture, so an unfinished surface may take up paint unevenly. A fully dry craft model can be prepared and coated in light layers, allowing each layer to dry before the next. Solvent-heavy products, thick sealants, and strong fumes may be unsuitable for home use or enclosed spaces. A medical fracture or clubfoot cast is not a craft surface: coating it can hide damage, trap moisture, or obstruct inspection of the skin and padding.

Remove loose dust gently, protect the work area, and test the chosen water-based craft paint on an inconspicuous spot. Apply a thin coat with ventilation and follow the product label. Keep paint away from a clinical cast unless the treating team gives specific permission and product advice. Do not use paint to seal a crack, reshape plaster, or cover a damp cast.

For a medical cast, contact the care team if it becomes wet, soft, cracked, tight, loose, or uncomfortable. Urgent assessment is needed when fingers or toes turn pale or blue, become numb, or swell progressively. These changes need a cast check rather than a cosmetic repair.
