What should you know about paint for plaster of paris?

A craft object made from plaster of Paris can usually be prepared as a porous surface for decoration. A fracture cast has a different purpose: clinicians need to see its condition and monitor the skin, swelling, and fit around the limb. Paint, sealant, or moisture may soften or trap dampness against the cast, hide cracks, and make changes harder to notice. Clubfoot casting and fracture casting follow clinical instructions that take priority over appearance.

For a non-medical plaster model, let it dry fully, remove loose dust, and test a small hidden area before applying a thin compatible water-based craft coating. Use ventilation and keep products away from children and food surfaces. For a medical cast, ask the treating team before applying anything; keep the cast dry and do not cover openings, padding, or edges. Never use paint to repair a cracked or softened cast.

Contact the casting team promptly if a medical cast becomes wet, soft, cracked, loose, tight, foul-smelling, or painful, or if fingers or toes become numb, pale, blue, or increasingly swollen. Do not wait for an appointment if circulation or sensation changes suddenly.
