What should you know about painful sore throat?

Short answer
A painful sore throat often settles with supportive care, but some patterns need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a painful sore throat can mean
Throat pain may accompany a Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, Strep Throat or Glandular Fever. Irritation from dry air, voice strain, smoke or acid reflux can also make swallowing uncomfortable. Allergic Rhinitis may cause mucus draining into the throat and a scratchy feeling. A sore throat is a symptom, so its presence alone does not identify one condition.
Notice whether the pain began suddenly or gradually, whether swallowing is difficult, and whether you also have fever, cough, blocked nose, swollen neck glands, a rash or marked tiredness. These details help a clinician distinguish a short-lived irritation from an illness needing examination.
What you can do now
Drink fluids regularly and choose cool or warm drinks according to what feels soothing. Soft foods, rest and avoiding smoking or smoky rooms may reduce irritation. Gargling with warm salty water can help some adults, provided it is not swallowed. Use simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the product directions; a pharmacist can check this when you take other medicines or have a medical condition.
Wash your hands, avoid sharing cups and consider staying home while you feel unwell. Antibiotics do not treat viral causes, so an assessment is useful before taking them.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if you cannot breathe, cannot swallow liquids, are drooling because swallowing is too difficult, or develop rapidly increasing swelling in the mouth or neck. Arrange prompt medical advice for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, dehydration, a persistent high temperature, or symptoms that are worsening rather than easing. A clinician should also assess recurrent episodes or a sore throat that does not improve.
Questions for your doctor
Could an examination or throat test help identify the cause? Which pain-relief options suit my medicines and health conditions? When is it safe to return to work or school, and which changes should prompt reassessment?
