What should you know about painful skin rash?

Redness, warmth, swelling, blisters, scaling, or open areas can point toward different causes. A bacterial skin infection such as Cellulitis may make the area warm and tender and can expand over time. A cluster of tender bumps may be a boil or an abscess. Burning pain with grouped blisters on one side can occur with Shingles. Friction, a new product, eczema, or an allergic reaction can also make skin sore without being contagious.

The location matters: a rash near the eye, on the face, around the genitals, or over a large area deserves a lower threshold for assessment. Pain that feels out of proportion to what is visible also warrants prompt medical review.

Keep the skin clean and dry, avoid scratching, and pause newly introduced creams, fragrances, or hair-removal products. Wear loose clothing and use a cool, clean compress for comfort. Do not squeeze blisters, cut a lump, or share towels. Take a clear photograph in good light so changes in spread or colour can be described accurately. A clinician may recommend a swab, examination, antiviral treatment, antibiotics, or drainage depending on the pattern.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if the rash spreads quickly, becomes markedly hot or swollen, forms blisters with significant pain, or is accompanied by fever, confusion, faintness, or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, eye involvement, or widespread blistering. Prompt review is also sensible if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or a recent operation.

Ask what pattern the rash suggests, whether infection is possible, which products or medicines to stop, and what changes should trigger urgent review. Ask how to protect other household members if a contagious cause is suspected.
