Painful pimple under the skin

A deep acne lesion can feel firm, sore, and buried without a visible head. A boil often becomes increasingly tender and may collect pus around a hair follicle. Cellulitis causes diffuse warmth, redness, and swelling around an area rather than one neat spot. Repeated nodules in skin folds can be a presentation of hidradenitis suppurativa. Burning followed by grouped blisters points more toward shingles. The appearance and evolution are more useful than the word pimple when deciding what it is.

Wash gently, avoid scrubbing, and apply a clean warm compress for comfort. Keep hands off the area: squeezing can rupture deeper tissue, worsen inflammation, and increase the chance of scarring. Avoid layering several harsh spot products on a tender lesion. If it opens, clean the surrounding skin and cover it lightly. A clinician can advise whether acne treatment, infection treatment, or abscess drainage fits the findings.

Arrange a medical review if the bump keeps enlarging, returns in the same area, drains repeatedly, or leaves a firm lump after the surface settles. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, red streaks, severe pain, or swelling near the eye. Early assessment is especially helpful if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or several similar lesions.

Ask whether the lesion is acne, a boil, cyst, or infection; whether treatment could reduce scarring; what products to pause; and which changes mean you should return quickly.
