Painful lump under the skin on the hand

A boil or small abscess can produce a focused, tender swelling, sometimes with a pale centre or drainage. Cellulitis tends to cause warmth, redness, and swelling that spreads through the skin. A nail-edge infection can make pain and swelling concentrate beside a finger or thumb. Shingles can cause burning sensitivity followed by grouped blisters, usually on one side. The location, appearance, movement, and timing help a clinician distinguish these possibilities; a lump on the hand is not automatically an infection.

Gently wash the area, keep any wound covered with a clean dressing, and avoid pressing or puncturing the swelling. Remove rings early if the finger or hand is becoming swollen. Rest the hand and keep it raised when comfortable. Do not apply harsh chemicals or leftover medicines. If pus is trapped, a clinician may recommend abscess drainage; treatment depends on the cause and depth of the problem.

Get prompt care if redness or swelling is spreading, finger movement is painful or limited, sensation changes, or the hand becomes increasingly hot. Urgent assessment is needed for fever, red streaks, severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, or a wound from an animal or human bite. Delayed care can affect tendons, joints, or deeper hand spaces.

Ask what structure is swollen, whether a wound or nail fold is involved, whether imaging or drainage is needed, how to dress the area, and which movement or colour changes require urgent attention.
