Painful lump under the skin of the inner thigh

A tender, warm lump that becomes softer in the centre may be a boil or a pocket of pus. Cellulitis can cause spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and pain without a defined centre. Repeated painful nodules in the groin or inner thighs can occur with hidradenitis suppurativa, which may later leave scars or draining openings. Shingles is more often a burning or sensitive rash with grouped blisters on one side rather than one isolated lump. The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis.

Keep the area clean and dry, reduce rubbing with loose clothing, and use a warm, clean compress for short periods. Do not squeeze, pierce, or shave directly over the lump; these actions can push infection deeper or irritate nearby skin. Cover any drainage with clean gauze and wash your hands after touching it. A clinician can decide whether you need medicine or an in-clinic procedure such as abscess drainage.

Arrange prompt medical care if redness is spreading, the area is increasingly hot or swollen, drainage has a strong odour, or walking becomes difficult. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, marked weakness, rapidly worsening pain, red streaks, or swelling near the genitals. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation should seek advice early because skin infections may progress quickly.

Ask whether the lump appears to be a boil, abscess, cellulitis, or hidradenitis; whether it needs drainage; how to protect the skin from friction; and which changes should trigger an urgent review.
