Painful Lump Under the Breast at the Bra Line

The bra line traps heat and moisture and can rub against skin, leading to an irritated follicle, boil, cyst, or inflammation of sweat glands. A tender area may also reflect a pulled chest muscle or a change in breast tissue extending toward the fold. Breast cancer can present with a breast lump, but the location or tenderness cannot identify the cause. A clinician will assess whether the lump is in the skin, chest wall, or breast and look for infection or other changes.

Keep the fold clean and dry, choose a well-fitting supportive bra, and reduce rubbing while the area settles. Do not squeeze, lance, or repeatedly massage a lump. Arrange an appointment if it remains, grows, recurs, feels firm or fixed, or is accompanied by breast or nipple changes. Record when it appeared and whether the skin is red, warm, or draining.

Seek prompt care for fever, spreading redness, warmth, pus, rapidly worsening pain, or swelling. Arrange breast assessment for skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a hard fixed lump. Urgent help is appropriate for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, faintness, or sudden deterioration.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin fold, chest wall, or breast tissue, whether infection treatment or imaging is needed, and which warning signs should bring you back sooner. Describe bra friction, shaving, exercise, fever, discharge, and any changes in the breast.
