Painful Lump on the Face Under the Skin: What You Should Know

A localised tender lump with warmth, redness or pus may occur with a Boil or a deeper abscess. Redness that expands beyond the lump, increasing warmth and illness can occur with Cellulitis. Recurrent painful lumps in the armpits, groin or under the breasts may fit Hidradenitis Suppurativa, although a facial lump has other possible causes. Shingles can begin with pain or sensitivity before a one-sided blistering rash appears. A photograph and examination may be needed to distinguish these patterns.

Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and use a clean warm compress for comfort. Do not share towels or touch the lump repeatedly. Marking the edge of spreading redness can help you notice change, but do not delay care to monitor it. A clinician may decide whether medication, observation or a procedure such as Abscess Drainage is appropriate. Treatment depends on the cause; Antiviral Treatment is relevant only when a viral diagnosis such as shingles is made.

Seek same-day care for rapidly spreading redness, fever, worsening swelling, severe pain, pus, red streaking or feeling faint. Facial swelling near the eye, vision changes, difficulty opening the mouth, confusion or breathing trouble needs urgent assessment. Arrange an appointment for a lump that recurs, remains firm, changes, or does not improve.
