Painful Fibroadenoma in Pregnancy

Fibroadenomas are solid breast lumps that often move slightly under the skin. Pregnancy hormones can make breast tissue fuller and may make an existing fibroadenoma feel larger, firmer, or sore. Breast pain can also come from normal glandular changes, a blocked duct, inflammation, or pressure from clothing. Pain does not establish the cause, and a breast lump may need imaging even when it resembles a previous fibroadenoma. A clinician will consider how long it has been present, whether it is changing, and whether the skin or nipple looks different.

Book an appointment for a breast examination if the lump is new, growing, persistently painful, or different from your usual tissue. Wear a supportive, comfortable bra and avoid repeated pressing or checking, which can increase tenderness. Tell the clinician how far along you are and share any prior breast imaging. A breast ultrasound is commonly considered in pregnancy because it uses sound waves; the clinician will decide whether further assessment, such as a biopsy, is needed.

Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, marked swelling, fever, pus, rapidly increasing pain, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or bloody discharge. Contact a clinician soon if the lump is fixed, continues to enlarge, or remains after breastfeeding changes settle. Do not delay assessment because you are pregnant; the team can select pregnancy-appropriate examinations and imaging.

Ask whether the lump feels consistent with a fibroadenoma, which imaging is suitable at your stage of pregnancy, and what change should trigger review. You can also ask whether a biopsy is necessary and how pain or infection would be managed safely during pregnancy.
