Short answer

Pain where your thigh meets your groin can involve the hip joint, inner-thigh muscles, tendons, or a recent strain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What groin-crease pain may mean

Consider what brings it on, such as running, changing direction, lifting the leg, coughing, or turning in bed. These clues help guide an assessment but do not confirm a cause by themselves.

Common patterns to discuss

Hip Impingement may cause deep groin discomfort during hip flexion or rotation. Hip Labral Tear can be linked with catching, clicking, or pain during twisting. Hip Osteoarthritis may cause groin pain alongside stiffness and difficulty with everyday movement. A sudden sprint, kick, or sideways step can strain the adductor muscles. Pain that spreads from the lower back or buttock may have a nerve-related source. A bulge or pain with coughing can indicate a problem outside the hip and needs clinical review.

An examination can check hip motion, inner-thigh strength, abdominal and groin areas, and the back. Imaging is considered when the examination or injury history calls for it.

Managing symptoms safely

Pause sprinting, kicking, deep lunges, and forceful stretching while they provoke pain. Short, easy walks may be reasonable if they do not increase symptoms. After a recent strain, a wrapped cold pack can be soothing; protect the skin and limit each application. Do not massage a newly injured area aggressively. A sports physiotherapist can guide a gradual return through movement, strength, and running drills when appropriate.

Note whether pain is improving, spreading, or returning with a particular task. That record helps tailor treatment and avoid repeatedly loading the same tissue.

When to get help

Seek urgent assessment for severe pain after trauma, inability to bear weight, a visibly swollen or deformed hip, or a painful groin bulge that cannot be gently reduced. Prompt care is also needed with fever, marked redness, new leg weakness, or numbness around the saddle area. Arrange a medical review if pain persists, affects sport or walking, or keeps returning despite reducing the trigger.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the pain is coming from the hip joint, adductors, abdominal wall, or back. Ask when to begin strengthening, whether sports physiotherapy is suitable, and which warning signs should change the plan.

Questions people ask

Can a groin muscle strain hurt when lifting the leg?

Yes. Inner-thigh muscles help move and stabilise the hip, so lifting or bringing the leg inward may reproduce strain pain.

When is physiotherapy useful?

After serious injury has been excluded, guided rehabilitation can restore hip movement and strength while loading is increased gradually.
