What should you know about pain under both armpits no lumps?

The armpit contains skin, sweat glands, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and lymph nodes. Irritation from shaving or deodorant, a blocked gland, a rash, or a small infection can cause tenderness even when no lump is easy to feel. Exercise or carrying weight can strain the chest, shoulder, or upper-arm muscles and make pain worse with movement.

Pain on both sides may also reflect a shared activity, skin product, or medication effect. Breast cancer can involve armpit lymph nodes, and lymphoma can involve lymph nodes, but pain without a lump does not identify either condition. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

Notice when the pain began, whether it follows exercise or arm movement, and whether there is redness, warmth, a rash, fever, breast change, or reduced shoulder movement. Avoid shaving and fragranced products for a few days, keep the area dry, and use gentle movement if it does not increase discomfort.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain persists, returns, interferes with sleep, or has no clear trigger. The clinician may examine both armpits, breasts, chest wall, neck, and arms, then decide whether further testing is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for armpit pain with chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, sudden weakness, or severe arm swelling. Arrange prompt care for fever, spreading redness, pus, a newly noticed lump, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or pain that is steadily worsening.

Ask: Could this be muscle or skin-related? Do you feel any enlarged lymph nodes? Should my breasts or chest wall be examined? Which changes should make me return sooner? Would an ultrasound or another test help if the pain continues?
