Pain reliever for tension headache

Short answer
For a tension headache, rest, fluids, relaxation and an appropriate simple pain reliever may help, but frequent headaches need a clinical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What tension headache feels like
Tension headache commonly causes a steady pressure or tightening on both sides of the head, forehead or neck. It may follow poor sleep, prolonged screen use, stress, jaw clenching or neck and shoulder tension. Light activity does not usually make it dramatically worse, but the pattern varies. A headache that is new, rapidly worsening or unlike your usual pain should not be assumed to be tension headache.
Relief and prevention
Take a break from close screen work, loosen your jaw and shoulders, drink water and try slow breathing or gentle neck movement. A quiet, dim room and a regular meal may help if you have missed food or sleep. Use a suitable pain reliever exactly as directed and avoid taking headache medicine on many days, because frequent use can perpetuate headaches. Keep a diary of timing, sleep, stress, caffeine, medicines and response so a clinician can identify patterns.
When to seek urgent care
Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever or a headache after head injury. Seek prompt medical advice for new headaches with vision changes, repeated vomiting, pregnancy, cancer, immune suppression, or a pattern that is becoming more frequent or harder to control.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pattern fit tension headache? Which medicine is safest for me, and how often may I use it? Could jaw, vision, sleep or neck problems be contributing, and would a GP consultation help?
