Pain on the Thigh Near the Groin

Short answer
Pain on the thigh near the groin can arise from an adductor strain, hip joint irritation, or another nearby problem, so the trigger and associated symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clue
- Record whether pain began suddenly during sport or gradually with daily activity.
- Mention
- Tell the clinician about clicking, catching, stiffness, weakness, or back symptoms.
What it may mean
A sudden pain during sprinting, kicking, or changing direction can involve the inner-thigh adductor muscles. Pain that builds with walking, sitting, or turning the hip may come from the hip joint. Hip impingement can cause groin pain with deep flexion or rotation, while a labral tear may be associated with clicking, catching, or a deep ache. Hip osteoarthritis can bring stiffness and reduced range of motion.
Pain can also be felt in the groin from the lower back, abdomen, or other structures. Location alone cannot identify the cause, so the history and examination are useful.
What you can do now
Pause sprinting, kicking, deep lunges, and wide-leg movements that reproduce pain. Keep comfortable walking and gentle hip movement if they do not cause limping or a later flare. Use a gradual return to activity rather than testing the painful movement repeatedly. A physiotherapist can assess strength, hip movement, and running or sport mechanics; Sports Physiotherapy may be useful when symptoms relate to training.
Do not aggressively stretch a freshly painful inner thigh. Arrange review if pain is not improving, limits daily activities, or keeps returning.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical care for inability to bear weight, severe pain after a fall, a visible bulge, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or a hot and very tender joint. Urgent assessment is also needed for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or difficulty controlling urine or stool. Otherwise, arrange an examination for persistent or worsening symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pain is more consistent with an adductor muscle, hip joint, or referred source; which activities are safe; whether you need imaging; and how to progress strengthening without provoking symptoms.
