What should you know about pain on hand near thumb?

Short answer
Pain on the hand near the thumb may involve the thumb-side tendons, a joint, muscle strain, or injury, and the painful movement helps narrow the cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Map the pain
- Separate wrist-side, joint, palm-side, and back-of-hand pain when describing symptoms.
- Modify tasks
- Use lighter grips and avoid repeated thumb loading while symptoms are active.
What may be happening
Pain at the thumb side of the wrist that increases when lifting, gripping, or moving the thumb can occur when the tendons and their covering become irritated, as in De Quervain's tenosynovitis. Pain at the thumb joint may instead follow a sprain, joint wear, or repeated loading. A fall can injure a ligament or bone even when swelling is modest. Aching with tingling or weakness may indicate nerve involvement.
The symptom does not establish a diagnosis. Note whether pain sits at the wrist, base of the thumb, palm, or back of the hand, and whether opening containers or turning a key reproduces it.
Comfort and protection
Limit painful gripping, lifting, and repeated thumb movements for now. Keep the wrist and thumb in a relaxed position, change how you hold objects, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for recent soreness. Gentle movement within a comfortable range can prevent stiffness; stop if it increases pain. An assessment can help decide whether a thumb support, exercises, or another treatment is appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care after a fall with deformity, marked swelling, inability to move the thumb, new numbness, or a pale or cold hand. Arrange prompt evaluation for worsening pain, loss of grip strength, or symptoms that do not improve with reduced use.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure is affected, whether a thumb or wrist support is suitable, what movements to avoid, and when to begin strengthening or return to normal tasks.

Questions people ask
Is thumb-side wrist pain linked with tendon irritation?
It can be. Pain with thumb movement or gripping is a pattern seen with De Quervain's tenosynovitis, although other causes are possible.
Should the thumb be kept completely still?
Usually, comfortable gentle movement is preferable to forcing motion or holding the thumb rigid for prolonged periods; a clinician can advise if support is needed.
