What should you know about pain on hand between thumb and index finger?

The web space contains small muscles and connective tissues that help spread and control the thumb. Repeated pinching, opening jars, lifting a child, gaming, or tool use can overload them. Pain closer to the wrist on the thumb side, especially with thumb movement, can occur with De Quervain's tenosynovitis. Bruising, swelling, or pain after a fall raises concern for a sprain or fracture. Tingling or reduced sensation suggests that a nerve may also be involved.

The location is a clue rather than a diagnosis. Compare both hands, note which motion reproduces the pain, and observe whether the thumb can move and grip normally.

Pause painful pinching and heavy gripping, keep frequently used objects light, and support the hand in a comfortable neutral position. Gentle thumb movement is reasonable if it does not increase symptoms. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease recent soreness. Avoid repeatedly testing the painful movement or applying a tight wrap that causes tingling. Arrange an assessment when pain persists, returns with normal use, or weakens your grip.

Seek urgent care after a significant fall, visible deformity, severe swelling, inability to move the thumb, new numbness, or a hand that becomes pale or cold. Prompt evaluation is appropriate when pain is severe, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by loss of strength.

Ask whether the pain is coming from a tendon, muscle, joint, or bone; whether a splint or imaging would help; and how to modify gripping until the hand settles.
