Short answer

Pain inside the upper thigh near the groin can involve adductor muscles, the hip joint, or nearby tissues, and its trigger helps guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the pain

A sudden stretch, sprint, kick, or change of direction can strain the adductor muscles on the inner thigh. Pain with squeezing the knees together or stretching the groin supports that pattern. Deep groin pain with sitting, pivoting, or bringing the knee upward can come from the hip joint. Hip impingement can cause painful contact during certain hip positions, while a hip labral tear may produce catching, clicking, or a feeling of instability. Hip osteoarthritis can cause stiffness and reduced hip movement alongside groin discomfort. A clinician also considers abdominal, nerve, and non-musculoskeletal causes when the story does not fit a simple strain.

Helpful early measures

For a recent sports-related pain, stop sprinting, kicking, and cutting movements. Walk only as comfortably as possible and avoid forceful stretching in the early phase. A wrapped cold pack may help after activity, while later rehabilitation usually focuses on gradual strength, hip control, and a careful return to load. Sports Physiotherapy can help identify movement demands and build that progression. Do not return to sport while you are limping or cannot perform basic movements comfortably.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care after a fall, forceful twist, inability to bear weight, or a visible groin bulge. Get urgent help for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, a numb or weak leg, or sudden testicular pain. Arrange review when symptoms persist, recur with sport, or are accompanied by locking or catching in the hip.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pain fit an adductor strain or a hip joint problem? Which movements should I avoid? Would physiotherapy help, and how should activity progress? Do clicking, catching, or stiffness change whether imaging is needed?

Questions people ask

Is groin pain always a pulled muscle?

No. The hip joint, nerves, abdominal tissues, and other structures can also refer pain to the groin.

Should I stretch a painful groin?

Avoid forceful stretching at first; gentle movement and guided rehabilitation are safer when symptoms settle.
