Pain inside the left leg near the groin: what to know

Short answer
Pain inside the left leg near the groin may come from the hip joint, inner-thigh muscles, or nearby nerves, and the onset, movement pattern, and warning signs help guide care.

Where it may start
Pain near the groin can be referred from the hip. Hip Impingement, a Hip Labral Tear, and Hip Osteoarthritis can present with discomfort at the front of the hip or upper inner thigh, often during bending, pivoting, or walking. A sudden stretch or change of direction can irritate the adductor muscles. Burning or travelling pain may involve a nerve. The location alone cannot tell which condition is responsible.
Consider whether the pain is deep or close to the skin, whether it follows a fall or sport, and whether there is bruising, a limp, back pain, tingling, fever, or difficulty lifting the leg. This information helps distinguish a local muscle issue from a hip or nerve problem.
What may help
Stop sprinting, kicking, deep lunges, and quick direction changes if they reproduce symptoms. Take shorter steps and use support on stairs while walking is uncomfortable. Keep gentle movement within a tolerable range, without forcing the inner thigh or repeatedly checking the painful motion. After a recent strain, a wrapped cold pack may be soothing. Sports Physiotherapy can assess running, strength, and movement technique when symptoms are related to exercise.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment after a fall or forceful injury if you cannot bear weight, the leg looks abnormal, or pain is severe. Get prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, new numbness, progressive weakness, or a cold or pale foot. Arrange a clinical review when symptoms persist, recur with normal activity, cause a limp, or interrupt sleep.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the hip, adductor muscles, lower back, or a nerve appears involved; what activities can continue; whether imaging is needed; and how to return to exercise safely.

Questions people ask
Can a hip problem cause pain down the upper leg?
Yes. Pain from the hip may be felt in the groin or upper inner thigh, particularly during weight-bearing or hip movement.
What if the pain started during sport?
Pause the movement that caused it, avoid testing it at full speed, and arrange an assessment if walking or normal movement remains difficult.
