Pain in the Wrist After a Fall

Landing on an outstretched hand can stress the wrist bones and ligaments. Tenderness, swelling, bruising, reduced movement, or pain when pushing through the palm deserve attention. A Distal Radius Fracture is one possible injury near the wrist. Numbness or tingling in the fingers may reflect nerve irritation, while thumb-side pain can involve a tendon injury. A fall can also make unrelated conditions, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or hand arthritis, more noticeable, so the timing and examination matter.

Remove rings before swelling increases. Rest the hand, keep it raised, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Avoid lifting, pushing, or trying to straighten a visibly altered wrist. A loose temporary support may reduce movement, but it should not cause tingling, colour change, or increased pain. Arrange assessment if tenderness or limited movement remains, because an examination and imaging may be needed.

Seek urgent care for a deformity, open wound, severe swelling, inability to move the fingers or wrist, new numbness, or fingers that become pale, blue, or cold. Prompt assessment is also wise when pain is focused over a bone or prevents normal use, even if swelling is mild.

Ask which bone or ligament is tender, whether imaging is needed, how long to use support, and when movement and strengthening can safely restart.
