Pain in the Top of the Thigh and Groin

Short answer
Pain in the top of the thigh and groin can come from hip joints, nearby muscles or tendons, or an injury that needs examination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clues
- Pain with pivoting, squatting, sprinting, or lifting
- Do not ignore
- Inability to bear weight, fever, weakness, or a new groin lump
How the pattern helps
Groin pain that appears when pivoting, squatting, climbing stairs, or bringing the knee toward the chest can reflect the hip joint. Hip Impingement may cause catching or restricted movement, while a Hip Labral Tear can be associated with clicking, catching, or deep joint pain. Hip Osteoarthritis may produce stiffness and pain with walking or after rest. A sudden sprint, stretch, or change of direction can strain the inner-thigh muscles. Pain can also be referred from the lower back or abdomen, so location alone cannot identify its cause.
What to do today
Temporarily reduce sprinting, deep squats, sharp pivots, and any movement that reproduces the pain. Keep gentle, comfortable movement rather than staying completely still, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth after a recent strain. Do not force a stretch into sharp groin pain. Sports Physiotherapy can assess strength, hip range, running or lifting technique, and a gradual return to activity. Seek an examination if pain persists, recurs, or changes your walking pattern.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care after a fall or forceful injury if you cannot bear weight, the leg appears shortened or deformed, or pain is severe. Get prompt advice for fever, a hot swollen joint, a new groin lump, testicular pain, abdominal symptoms, numbness, or weakness. Sudden severe pain without a clear injury also warrants prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pain seems to arise from the hip joint, adductor muscles, back, or another area. Ask which movements are safe, whether imaging or physiotherapy is appropriate, and what return-to-sport milestones you should meet.

Questions people ask
Can a groin muscle strain cause upper-thigh pain?
Yes. Inner-thigh muscles attach near the groin and can hurt after sudden stretching, sprinting, or a change of direction.
When should hip-related groin pain be checked?
Arrange assessment when pain persists, causes catching or restricted movement, changes your gait, or follows a significant injury.
