Pain in the Tip of the Thumb When Pressed

The tender area may be the fingertip skin, the tissue beneath the nail, or the end joint. A recent knock, splinter, cut, biting habit, tight grip, or repeated phone use can irritate these tissues. Swelling, warmth, redness, drainage, or throbbing pain can point to inflammation or infection around the nail or skin. Pain that travels toward the thumb base or worsens with gripping may involve a tendon problem such as De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, although fingertip pain alone does not establish that diagnosis.

Reduce activities that press or pinch the thumb and keep the area clean. If there is swelling after a minor knock, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods and rest the hand. Do not dig under the nail or remove a possible splinter with unclean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable pain reliever is safe for you, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Arrange an examination if symptoms do not settle, keep returning, or interfere with writing, lifting, or sleep.

Seek prompt medical care for a deep cut, a crushed or visibly deformed thumb, loss of feeling, inability to bend or straighten it, or a fingertip that becomes pale, blue, or unusually cold.
