Pain in the Side of the Shoulder When Raising Your Arm

Short answer
Pain in the side of the shoulder when raising your arm can reflect tendon irritation, reduced space around the rotator cuff, stiffness, or referred neck pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Clues in the symptom pattern
Outer shoulder pain during reaching, dressing, or lifting can occur with Rotator Cuff Tendinitis or Shoulder Impingement. A sudden loss of strength after a fall or forceful movement can present with a Rotator Cuff Tear. If the shoulder gradually loses both active and passive movement, Frozen Shoulder is one possibility. Calcific Tendinitis may cause a particularly painful flare. Shoulder Osteoarthritis can bring aching and stiffness, while Cervical Radiculopathy may add neck pain, tingling, or symptoms farther down the arm. These presentations overlap, so a physical examination is more useful than trying to diagnose the cause from location alone.
Comfortable steps at home
Pause heavy lifting and repeated overhead work, but keep the shoulder moving gently within a tolerable range. Change tasks so the arm stays closer to the body and use support when sleeping if that feels better. A wrapped cold or warm pack can provide short-term comfort. Book an assessment when pain interferes with sleep or daily tasks, follows an injury, or is not improving. Strength testing and range-of-motion checks can help guide physiotherapy or further evaluation.
Signs needing urgent attention
Seek urgent care after trauma if the shoulder is visibly out of place, the arm is unusable, or the hand is numb, cold, or pale. Get prompt help for a hot red joint with fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or sudden severe weakness. Shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, sweating, or jaw pain should be treated as an emergency rather than assumed to be a muscle problem.
What to ask at review
Ask which movements reproduce the pain and whether your strength is reduced. Would physiotherapy be suitable, and which exercises should wait? Do you need imaging because of an injury, persistent weakness, or restricted movement? Ask how to modify work, sport, and sleep while the shoulder recovers.

Questions people ask
Is outer shoulder pain proof of a rotator-cuff tear?
No. Tendon irritation, impingement, stiffness, joint changes, and referred neck pain can produce similar symptoms.
Can gentle movement help?
Comfortable movement can help prevent stiffness, but stop short of sharp pain and avoid heavy loading until assessed.
