Pain in my palm near the thumb

Pain on the thumb side of the wrist or lower palm that worsens when lifting a child, opening a jar, or moving the thumb may fit De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. A fall or impact raises concern for a sprain or fracture, especially with swelling, bruising, or pain when pressing the area. Aching at the thumb base during pinching can involve the thumb joint. Tingling or numbness may indicate nerve irritation. The exact point of tenderness and the movement that reproduces pain are more useful than the side alone.

Rest the thumb from repetitive pinching, forceful gripping, and prolonged phone use for now. Keep the fingers moving gently, but avoid repeatedly testing the painful thumb. A cold pack wrapped in cloth can help after a recent flare. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a thumb-supporting splint is suitable and how to use it without excessive tightness. Arrange assessment if pain affects daily tasks, does not improve, or keeps returning.

Seek urgent assessment after an injury if the thumb is crooked, unstable, very swollen, numb, cold, or difficult to move. Prompt care is also needed for spreading redness, warmth, drainage, or fever. Arrange a routine examination for persistent pain, reduced grip, clicking, or symptoms that interfere with work, sleep, or self-care.
