Short answer

Pain in both thumbs can follow repeated gripping or pinching, tendon irritation, joint stress, or an injury, and the exact location helps guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind it

Pain near the wrist-side base of the thumb, especially with lifting a child, opening a jar, or moving the thumb, can occur with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Pain at the thumb joint during pinching may reflect joint irritation or overload. Both thumbs can become sore when a task suddenly increases, such as prolonged scrolling, crafts, racquet sports, or household work.

Swelling, catching, reduced pinch strength, or pain that continues despite reducing the activity gives a clinician useful information. Describe whether symptoms are at the base, along the side, or near the tip.

What to try

Reduce repetitive pinching and gripping, use larger handles where possible, and alternate tasks. Keep the thumb and wrist in a relaxed position rather than holding the thumb stretched away for long periods. A supportive thumb or wrist splint may help some people, but fit matters; a pharmacist or clinician can advise.

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, swelling develops, grip becomes unreliable, or daily activities remain difficult. Rehabilitation may focus on movement, tendon loading, and hand use after the cause is clearer.

When care is urgent

Seek urgent help after a significant injury if the thumb looks deformed, cannot move, or becomes numb, pale, or blue. Prompt care is also needed for rapidly increasing swelling, severe redness, fever, or sudden loss of grip.

Questions to bring

Ask which tissue is involved, whether a splint is suitable, which thumb movements to modify, and when strengthening should begin. Ask what symptoms would mean the diagnosis or treatment plan needs review.

Questions people ask

Can phone use contribute to thumb pain?

Long periods of scrolling or gripping can repeatedly load the thumb and wrist, particularly after a sudden increase in use.

Could both thumbs have tendon irritation?

Yes. A shared repetitive activity can irritate tendons on both sides, although examination is needed to confirm the cause.
