Short answer

Pain from the navel to the groin can come from the abdominal wall, hip, groin muscles, bowel, bladder, or reproductive organs, so its location and accompanying symptoms help guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pain pattern
Record the side, onset, triggers, and accompanying symptoms.
Possible source
Muscles and the hip are possible, but abdominal, urinary, bowel, and reproductive causes also need consideration.
Urgent warning
Severe worsening pain, fainting, repeated vomiting, or a painful trapped bulge needs urgent care.

What should you know about pain from navel to groin?

Notice whether the pain is sudden or gradual, on one side or both, and whether it changes with walking, coughing, lifting, urination, eating, or bowel movements. A strained muscle may hurt when the area is stretched or used, while internal causes can bring nausea, fever, urinary changes, or altered bowel habits.

What this pain may mean

The lower abdominal and groin region contains overlapping muscles, nerves, joints, and organs. Hip-related problems can refer pain into the groin. Hip impingement may cause discomfort with hip flexion, such as sitting low or bringing the knee upward. A hip labral tear can be associated with catching, clicking, or a deep ache. Hip osteoarthritis may cause stiffness and pain with walking or standing.

A pulled adductor or abdominal muscle is more likely to follow sport, a sudden change of direction, heavy lifting, or repeated exertion. A bulge that becomes more noticeable with coughing or straining may need assessment for a hernia. Burning urination, blood in the urine, testicular pain, vaginal bleeding, or pelvic pain points toward a non-musculoskeletal cause that should be assessed by an appropriate clinician.

What to do now

For mild pain that followed activity, reduce the provoking movement, avoid heavy lifting, and keep gently mobile within comfort. A wrapped cold pack for short periods may help during the first day after a strain; later, some people find gentle warmth soothing. Do not massage a painful lump or force stretches that increase symptoms.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, limits walking, or has no clear activity-related trigger. The clinician may examine your abdomen, hip, back, and groin and decide whether urine testing or imaging is appropriate. Physiotherapy can help when the source is a muscle, movement pattern, or hip problem; sports physiotherapy is particularly relevant when symptoms began during training or competition.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, or fever with marked illness. Do the same for a painful groin bulge that cannot be gently reduced, sudden testicular pain, or sudden severe pelvic pain.

Prompt assessment is also appropriate for blood in urine or stool, inability to pass urine or stool, new weakness or numbness, or pain after a significant injury. Pregnancy or possible pregnancy with lower abdominal or pelvic pain warrants urgent advice, especially when bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain is present.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask: Which tissues or organs could explain this pattern? What movements should I pause, and what activity is safe? Do I need an examination for a hernia, hip problem, urinary cause, or pelvic cause? Which warning symptoms should prompt same-day care? If this followed sport, ask when a graded return to running, lifting, or changing direction is reasonable.

Questions people ask

Can a hip problem cause pain near the groin?

Yes. Hip joint problems can refer pain into the groin, often with stiffness or discomfort during hip movement, walking, or sitting.

Should I exercise through this pain?

Avoid movements that clearly worsen the pain, especially lifting, sprinting, or sharp changes of direction, until the cause is clearer. Gentle comfortable movement is usually more suitable than complete stillness.

When does groin pain need medical assessment?

Arrange assessment when pain persists, recurs, limits function, or comes with urinary, bowel, fever, pelvic, or testicular symptoms. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
