Pain Between the Thumb and Index Finger: What to Know

Short answer
Pain between the thumb and index finger may reflect irritated muscles, a strained ligament, joint trouble, or tendon inflammation after gripping or an injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Repeated pinching, gripping, or thumb use

- Reduce forceful thumb movement temporarily
Understanding the web space
The web space contains small muscles and supporting tissues that help spread, pinch, and stabilise the thumb. Repeated phone use, tools, lifting, or forceful pinching can overload these tissues.
Pain near the thumb side of the wrist can also be associated with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, especially when thumb movement causes pulling or tenderness. A fall, bruising, swelling, or reduced pinch strength raises concern for a different injury.
Practical self-care
For now, limit forceful pinching, jar opening, heavy bags, and repeated thumb motions. Keep the fingers moving gently within a comfortable range so the hand does not become stiff.
A cool pack over a cloth can calm recent soreness. A thumb-supporting splint may reduce motion temporarily, but it should not be tight or cause tingling. If symptoms do not settle, a clinician can check the joints, tendons, sensation, and grip.
When medical review matters
Book an assessment for pain that persists, recurs with ordinary hand use, or makes it difficult to pinch, write, or hold objects. Get prompt advice after a fall or twist with swelling, bruising, or reduced movement.
Seek urgent care if the thumb or hand is visibly deformed, numb, unusually pale or blue, or impossible to move. Rapidly increasing redness, warmth, or swelling with fever also needs prompt medical attention.
Useful questions
Ask which tissue is tender, whether a splint is appropriate, how long to modify gripping, and which exercises can restore pinch strength. Mention any fall, new activity, clicking, numbness, or change in hand function.

Questions people ask
Is pain in this area always a tendon problem?
No. Muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, and tendons can all cause pain there, so the pattern and examination matter.
When should I get the hand checked?
Arrange review when pain affects grip or continues, and seek urgent care for deformity, loss of sensation, or a hand that changes colour.
