Short answer

Pain between the finger and thumb may come from irritated thumb tendons, a joint or ligament injury, or strain in the web-space muscles, depending on how it started.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the area can tell you

Pain that runs along the thumb side of the wrist and increases with lifting or gripping can occur with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Pain in the web space after the thumb was pulled backward or forcefully away from the hand may involve a ligament. Aching after prolonged texting, writing, or tool use can reflect overload of small hand muscles or nearby joints. Bruising, swelling, clicking, or a thumb that feels loose gives a clinician useful information about the injured structure.

What to do

Limit forceful pinching, wide thumb stretches, and repetitive hand work for a short period. Keep the thumb and fingers moving gently in a comfortable range so the hand does not become stiff. A supportive thumb splint can reduce aggravating movement during selected tasks. Use a cold pack wrapped in cloth after a recent strain if it feels soothing. Do not tightly tape the hand or continue painful testing movements. A clinician or hand therapist can tailor support and exercises.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment if the thumb is visibly displaced, cannot pinch, feels unstable, or became numb after an injury. Urgent help is appropriate for severe swelling, colour change, or an open wound. Arrange a review when pain interferes with grasping, keeps returning, or does not start settling after activity modification.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pain is more consistent with a tendon, ligament, muscle, or joint issue and whether imaging is needed. Ask how to use a splint, which movements are safe, and when hand therapy or strengthening should begin.

Questions people ask

Can thumb tendon irritation hurt between the thumb and finger?

It can. Tendon irritation near the thumb-side wrist may be felt toward the base of the thumb and nearby web space during gripping.

Is a loose-feeling thumb a reason to seek care?

Yes. Instability after an injury may indicate ligament damage and should be examined, especially if pinch strength is reduced.
