Pain behind the ear: what should you know?

A recent cold can leave glands around the ear and neck tender. Earwax buildup may cause pressure or muffled hearing, while a middle-ear infection may bring deeper ear pain, fever or irritability. Sinusitis and tonsillitis can send discomfort toward the ear even when the ear itself looks normal. Jaw clenching and neck tension are other possibilities. A doctor may examine the ear canal, eardrum, mouth, throat, jaw and neck rather than judging the cause from location alone.

Avoid pressure on the painful side and do not scratch the skin or put objects into the ear. Gentle neck movement, a comfortable pillow and a warm compress may help muscular discomfort. Drink enough fluids and rest if you have cold symptoms. Use a labelled pain reliever only if it is suitable for you; a pharmacist can check this when you have other illnesses or take regular medicines. Ear drops and antibiotic treatment should follow professional advice.

Get urgent medical help if the area becomes red and swollen, the ear sticks out, severe dizziness or facial weakness develops, or you have severe headache, confusion or high fever. Seek a routine assessment for ongoing pain, discharge, hearing loss, repeated episodes or pain after an injury.

Ask whether the source is the ear, jaw, throat, neck or skin and whether you need a hearing check. Describe the timing, side, fever, discharge, hearing change, dental symptoms and any recent cold.
