Short answer

Pain at the tip of the thumb may follow an injury, irritation around the nail or skin, joint stress, or nerve sensitivity, so visible changes and sensation matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Look for
Check the nail, pad, skin colour, swelling, and sensation on both sides of the thumb.
Avoid
Do not force a painful pinch or try to drain a swollen fingertip yourself.

Possible explanations

A recent knock, cut, splinter, burn, or nail problem can make the tip tender. Burning, electric pain, or altered sensation may suggest nerve irritation. Pain that is worse when pinching, texting, or gripping may involve the thumb joints or tendons. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis more often causes pain along the thumb side of the wrist, but thumb use can make the surrounding area feel sore.

Notice whether the pain is at the nail, pad, joint, or wrist side of the thumb. Record swelling, redness, warmth, bruising, numbness, and any loss of pinch strength; these details make an examination more useful.

What to do at home

Protect the thumb from forceful pinching and repeated scrolling for a short period. Keep nearby joints gently mobile, but do not press through sharp pain. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may help after a minor knock, while keeping a cut clean and covered reduces contamination. Avoid biting the nail, draining a swollen area, or applying strong products to broken skin.

If symptoms began after a change in work, sport, or device use, adjust the grip and take regular pauses. A clinician or hand therapist can check tendon glide, joint stability, sensation, and pinch function.

When to seek care

Get urgent assessment for a deep cut, suspected fracture, severe swelling, a blue or pale thumb, loss of sensation, or inability to bend or straighten it. Redness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening throbbing can signal an infection needing prompt care. Arrange a routine review when pain persists, repeatedly returns, or limits grasping despite protecting the thumb.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which tissue is tender? Could the nail or skin be infected? Do I need an X-ray? Should I use a splint, and which thumb movements should I practise while it settles?
