Short answer

Pain around the shin bone often reflects increased loading or irritated tissues, but focused pain after activity or an injury should be assessed for a bone problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
A sudden increase in running, jumping, hills, or hard surfaces
Concerning pattern
A small focal tender spot or pain at rest
Activity change
Use comfortable low-impact exercise while symptoms settle

How to interpret shin pain

Shin pain commonly appears after increasing running, jumping, hills, or training on a harder surface. It may be spread along the inner edge of the shin and settle with reduced loading. Pain in one small, clearly defined spot, pain that progresses to ordinary walking, or pain at rest raises more concern for a stress fracture. A stress fracture is a bone injury caused by repeated loading; shin pain is a symptom and does not identify the diagnosis. See the symptom guide for [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/).

Steps that may help

Temporarily replace running and jumping with low-impact movement that remains comfortable. Avoid testing the painful area with repeated hops or long walks. Check whether a recent change in distance, speed, footwear, terrain, or recovery preceded the symptoms. A clinician can examine the tender area and decide whether imaging or a rehabilitation plan is appropriate. Return to impact gradually only when walking and daily tasks are comfortable.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment for pinpoint tenderness, pain that persists despite rest, night or resting pain, swelling, or a limp. Seek urgent care after a significant blow or fall, if the leg looks deformed, the foot becomes cold or numb, or you cannot bear weight. Rapidly increasing pain with a tight, swollen lower leg also needs urgent attention.

Questions for an assessment

Ask whether the pattern fits a loading-related irritation or possible stress fracture, what activities are safe, whether imaging is needed, and how to progress back to impact without repeating the overload.

Questions people ask

Can I keep running with shin pain?

If running reproduces pain, switch temporarily to comfortable low-impact activity and seek advice if symptoms persist.

What makes a stress fracture different?

A stress fracture may cause focused tenderness and pain that continues with walking or appears at rest, but examination is needed.
