Pain and weakness in the left shoulder and arm: what to know

Shoulder tendons can become irritated or torn. [Rotator Cuff Tendinitis](/conditions/rotator-cuff-tendinitis/) and [Shoulder Impingement](/conditions/shoulder-impingement/) may hurt when reaching overhead, while a [Rotator Cuff Tear](/conditions/rotator-cuff-tear/) can cause sudden weakness after an injury. [Calcific Tendinitis](/conditions/calcific-tendinitis/) may cause intense shoulder pain and restricted movement.

Stiffness that gradually limits reaching may occur with [Frozen Shoulder](/conditions/frozen-shoulder/), and arthritis can affect shoulder movement. Pain, tingling, or weakness extending from the neck may indicate [Cervical Radiculopathy](/conditions/cervical-radiculopathy/). The left side also matters for safety: shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or faintness requires emergency help.

Stop lifting and overhead activity that increases pain or weakness, but keep the elbow, wrist, and shoulder gently moving within comfort. Support the arm during rest and avoid carrying heavy items on that side. Note whether weakness means pain-limited movement or true loss of power, such as dropping objects or being unable to raise the arm.

A clinician may examine the neck and shoulder together, compare strength and sensation, and assess tendon function. Depending on the findings, an X-ray, ultrasound, or other scan may be considered. Do not delay urgent care to monitor symptoms when chest or neurological warning signs are present.

Call emergency services for left shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or sudden severe weakness. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or lift if the shoulder looks deformed, the arm is numb or cold, or movement is suddenly lost. Arrange a clinical appointment when weakness persists, pain wakes you, or daily tasks become difficult.
