Pain and spotting after sex: what should you know?

Friction, dryness, a small surface tear, or inflammation can cause pain and a little blood after sex. Chlamydia and other infections may cause bleeding, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or pain when urinating. Cervical Dysplasia, cervical cancer, Endometrial Polyps, Uterine Fibroids, and womb cancer can also present with bleeding after sex; this symptom does not show which condition is present.

The pattern matters: note whether bleeding is fresh or brown, whether pain is at the opening or deeper, and whether symptoms occur after every sexual encounter or only sometimes.

Pause penetrative sex if it causes pain or bleeding. Avoid douching and scented products. Arrange a confidential appointment for an examination and discuss infection testing, cervical screening history, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and any medicines that affect bleeding. Record dates, amount, triggers, and associated symptoms.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, fever, vomiting, or a possible pregnancy. Arrange prompt review if bleeding recurs, occurs after menopause, or comes with unusual discharge, sores, or urinary symptoms.
