Pain after a discectomy: what should you know?

The incision and nearby muscles may feel sore after surgery. The nerve that was compressed by a herniated disc can also remain sensitive while it settles, so leg pain, tingling or altered sensation may not disappear immediately. A gradual change toward easier movement is reassuring, while pain that steadily intensifies, returns sharply after improving, or is joined by new numbness can signal a problem. Follow the discharge plan for medicines, wound care and activity. Short, frequent walks may help circulation and stiffness when your surgical team allows them. Change position regularly, keep loads light, and avoid bending, twisting or lifting until you have clear instructions. Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing back or leg pain, spreading redness or drainage at the wound, fever, or pain that is not controlled by the prescribed plan. Seek urgent care for new or worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, severe swelling, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment rather than watchful waiting.
