Short answer

Oyster food poisoning symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, and chills after contaminated oysters are eaten.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptoms may mean

Raw or undercooked oysters can carry germs or toxins that irritate the digestive system. Symptoms may begin soon after the meal or later, depending on the cause. Nausea, loose stools, cramping, and vomiting commonly occur together. Fever can accompany an infection. These symptoms fit a broader pattern of Food Poisoning, but they do not identify the exact germ on their own.

The main short-term concern is fluid loss. Watch for a dry mouth, dizziness, very little urine, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty keeping drinks down. Symptoms can also overlap with other illnesses, so the timing of the meal, what else was eaten, and whether anyone else became ill are useful details.

What to do at home

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Oral Rehydration Therapy can replace water and salts lost through diarrhoea or vomiting. Rest, and return to light foods when your stomach settles. Avoid raw oysters and prepare food carefully for other people while you are unwell. Do not take leftover antibiotics or medicines intended to stop diarrhoea without professional advice, especially if fever or blood in the stool is present.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint or confused, pass very little urine, have severe or worsening Abdominal Pain, blood in vomit or stool, or trouble breathing. Arrange medical assessment for persistent Vomiting, Diarrhoea, or Fever, and sooner if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or caring for a young child. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when dehydration cannot be corrected by drinking.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which symptoms suggest dehydration, whether testing is needed, and which foods or medicines to avoid while recovering. Tell the clinician when the oysters were eaten, whether they were raw, and the number of episodes of vomiting or diarrhoea.
