Oxywatch fingertip pulse oximeter: what to know

A fingertip sensor uses light to estimate oxygen saturation and count the pulse. It does not diagnose asthma, infection, heart disease or another cause of breathlessness. The result may be affected by a cold hand, movement, poor blood flow, nail products or a poor fit. A clinician interprets the reading with your breathing effort, appearance, medical history and any change from your normal state.

Sit down and rest before checking. Warm your hand, place the clip firmly on a finger, and remain still while the display stabilises. Repeat an unexpected result after checking the fit and battery, then write down the reading, time and symptoms. Use prescribed medicines as directed; do not start oxygen or alter its flow without professional advice.

Call emergency services if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak in full sentences, become confused or faint, develop blue or grey lips, or have sudden chest pain. Urgent advice is also needed when breathlessness is worsening or a concerning reading persists after a careful repeat. A reassuring display does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.
