What should you know about oxcarbazepine skin rash?

Oxcarbazepine can be followed by a drug eruption, which may look like red or pink spots, raised patches, hives, itching, or skin peeling. A rash can also have another cause, such as contact dermatitis, heat rash, or an infection, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. The timing, spread, associated symptoms, and any recent medicine changes help a clinician assess it.

Do not assume that a mild-looking rash will stay mild. Keep a record of when it began, where it started, how quickly it changed, and whether you took any new medicines or used a new product.

Contact the prescriber or an urgent medical service as soon as you notice a new rash. Tell them your oxcarbazepine dose, when treatment began, when the rash appeared, and every other medicine or supplement you use. Do not stop or restart oxcarbazepine on your own unless a clinician gives you a plan, because abrupt changes can affect seizure control.

Until you receive advice, avoid new creams, fragranced products, and scratching. Take clear photographs in good light so changes can be compared. A clinician may decide whether the medicine should be changed and what symptom relief is appropriate.

Seek emergency care for blistering, skin peeling, painful skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, swelling of the face or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, fever, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These features can signal a severe reaction and should not wait for a routine appointment.
