Over-the-counter nausea medicines in pregnancy

Pregnancy changes how the body handles medicines, and safety can depend on the stage of pregnancy, dose and other products being used. Nausea may be part of ordinary pregnancy sickness, but Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Gastritis, Acid Reflux, Gallstones or other conditions can also cause it.

Some products marketed for travel or stomach upset can cause drowsiness or interact with supplements and prescribed medicines. Natural or herbal labels do not automatically mean a product is suitable in pregnancy.

Before taking anything, tell the pharmacist how far along the pregnancy is, whether you are vomiting, and which medicines or supplements you use. Try small frequent meals, a plain snack before getting out of bed, cool drinks in small sips, and avoiding smells that trigger symptoms. Rest, and keep a record of what stays down and how often you pass urine.

Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel faint, have severe abdominal pain, fever, blood in vomit, or are losing weight. Urgent care is needed for confusion, collapse, severe dehydration, or pain that is getting worse. Heat Exhaustion and Hypoglycaemia can also make nausea more concerning and need appropriate assessment.
