Over-the-counter medicines for strep throat

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat, fever and swollen glands can occur, although these symptoms can also have other causes. A clinician may recommend a throat examination and testing before deciding whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Pain-relief medicines may make swallowing and resting easier. Read the active ingredients carefully because combination cold remedies can contain the same pain reliever as a separate product. Never use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription.

Follow the package directions for an age-appropriate pain or fever medicine, and ask a pharmacist if you have liver or kidney disease, stomach ulcers, take blood thinners, or use several medicines. Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and try warm drinks or a salt-water gargle if comfortable. Arrange a GP Consultation if strep throat is suspected; prescribed Antibiotic Treatment may be needed after assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, marked one-sided throat swelling, confusion, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Arrange prompt assessment if fever persists, symptoms worsen, or a rash develops. A severe sore throat can overlap with Tonsillitis and needs examination when symptoms are significant.
