What should you know about over the counter medicine for tonsillitis?

Over-the-counter medicines can relieve tonsillitis pain and fever, but they do not treat every cause of inflamed tonsils. Viral illness is common, while bacterial infections such as strep throat may require clinical assessment and antibiotic treatment.

A suitable pain or fever medicine may make swallowing easier when taken according to its label. Lozenges, cool drinks, warm fluids and soft foods can soothe an irritated throat. Tonsillitis may also occur with swollen glands, earache or fever.

Symptom improvement does not identify the cause. A GP consultation can help distinguish uncomplicated inflammation from an infection needing further care, particularly when symptoms are severe or keep returning.

Rest, drink regularly and avoid smoke. Check active ingredients so you do not accidentally take the same pain medicine in more than one product. Ask a pharmacist about child dosing, pregnancy, allergies, stomach problems, kidney disease and interactions with regular medicines.

Do not take antibiotics left over from a previous illness. If a clinician prescribes antibiotic treatment, follow the instructions and report a rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty promptly.

Seek urgent help if breathing is difficult, saliva cannot be swallowed, the voice becomes muffled, the mouth cannot open normally, or swelling is much worse on one side. Arrange prompt care for dehydration, severe pain, persistent fever, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.

Ask whether your tonsils need examination or testing, which medicine is safest for relief, and what changes should prompt review. Mention duration, fever, earache, swollen glands and exposure to anyone with strep throat.
