Over-the-counter medicine for a rash under the breast

The skin fold can trap heat, sweat, and friction. Intertrigo may cause redness, soreness, cracking, or moisture; yeast or another infection can develop in the damaged skin. Contact dermatitis may follow a new bra fabric, detergent, deodorant, or cream. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, ringworm, scabies, and a drug rash can also appear in or near the fold.

An antifungal product is not appropriate for every red patch, and steroid products can hide an infection. The appearance, symptoms, and response to initial care guide the choice.

Rinse gently, pat completely dry, and change out of damp clothing. Wear a clean, breathable, well-fitting bra and place a soft dry fabric barrier in the fold if it reduces rubbing; change it when damp. Avoid fragranced products and vigorous scrubbing.

Use only a labelled product that matches the suspected problem, and keep it away from broken skin unless the instructions permit it. A pharmacist can help review the active ingredient, other medicines, pregnancy, and medical conditions. Do not share towels or bras if infection is possible.

Seek prompt medical care if redness spreads beyond the fold, pain is increasing, the area is hot or swollen, pus or a bad smell develops, or you have fever. These signs can indicate infection requiring assessment.

Arrange review when the rash keeps returning, does not improve with careful drying and suitable labelled treatment, or involves cracks, bleeding, extensive scale, or severe itch. Urgent help is needed for rapidly worsening swelling, widespread blistering, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the rash is intertrigo, yeast, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, or another condition; which product is safest; and how long to try it. Mention recent antibiotics, new products, diabetes, and any previous episodes.
